Beginner Chess Strategies

The power or value of a Rook is 5 points; it is considered a major chess piece.  How to get the most benefit for improving from these Rook strategies and tactics?  For the chess coaches/parents out there, I suggest that you set up the diagram position and give your students 5 minutes to solve it; after the time allowed, show them the diagram position with the GIF.  Hopefully, this will reinforce the tactics.  Have fun with these Rook positions and watch your kid’s chess understanding skyrocket.

Sizziling use of Space + Tempo by the Rook

What are the basic chess strategies and tactics of Rook moves for the beginner?  We will give critical Rook positions that need to be memorized to improve your understanding of Rook maneuvers.  Most chess players fail to study Rook ending; this is a grave error.   They prefer to study the more seductive, exciting part of chess – Opening.  This is a common mistake from beginner to advance, but if you consider the role and behavior of the Rook, you will change your position immediately.    One of the core principles in chess is space; the more space you have, the better your position.  It’s the Rook that embodies space; to understand the Rook is to understand space.   International Chess Master Emory Tate would say, “When I play chess, I have an extra file.”  Let’s look at how the Rook operates in these Rook endgame strategies below.

Rook vs. Pawn on 6th rank
Rook draw with Pawn on 7th rank

Black is lost in this position because White can attack the Rook with tempo.  Also, once White’s Pawn reaches the 7th rank, it will be Queen.

Black can hold, draw, this position because his Rook is on the long side of the Pawn, and when White King tries to avoid checks approaching the Rook, it will only attack the Pawn from the rank or file assuring a draw.

Famous Chess Strategies of the Rook

Why is the Rook strong in endgame positions?  As mentioned above, the Rook can control an enormous amount of space.  This allows the Rook to control a large swath of the board where the King cannot penetrate.  In King and Pawn vs. King and Rook ending, the King must escort the Pawn toward the Queening square.  If the King is limited to the 6th rank, he will not support his marching toward the Queening square.  Basically, we can envision the Rook as a divider, and he can divide the Kingside from the Queenside and horizontally the Rook divide along with the ranks.    Chess tips for beginners, think of the Rook as a huge armor vehicle; this armored tank needs room to roam. It needs an open field.  If you place it in a narrow path, it will lose its powers of space.  Keep your Rook on open files and empty ranks.  Let’s look at some more Rook and Pawn endgames.

Rook + Pawn win against Rook
King and Rook stops Pawn

This is a famous Rook position that the student will have to remember.  It’s not that difficult once you understand that White is just building a bridge with his Rook and King.

In this position, White King catches the Pawn.  The reason for this is that Black King can’t gain a tempo on White’s Rook.

Rook vs Pawn
Rook vs Advance Pawn

Black achieves a draw in this position because of the advanced nature of his Pawn and the placement of his King on edge.

White wins this game by walking his King over to the Kingside, protected from checks because of the Black King’s position on the Queenside.

Epic Rook vs. two Pawns endgame Principles Strategies

Chess endgame techniques are at the forefront of Rook vs. two Pawns; the positional possibilities are endless, making it impossible to calculate the correct path.  We need some rules, theory, and insightful guidance to come out as the victor.  The Rook is the best place behind the two pawns, as in most Rook vs. Pawn ending; if the Pawns are running, moving toward the Queening square, the Rook should attack the most advanced pawn first.  The Rook’s King should immediately rush toward the advancing Pawns to set up a blockade.  The Rook should try to cut off the King, either by file or rank.  If the two Pawns King is near his Pawns and far advanced, this is a difficult, or losing, position for the Rook.  If the Rook’s King can get in front of the two Pawns, the Rook side usually wins.

Rook vs two Pawns
Rook against two Pawns

White wins this position because he attacked the most advanced passed Pawn first. Also, White is near to assist in the operation of stopping the Pawns.

Black King tries to help Black stop the far advanced Pawns, but he is not allowed to take up the optimal position, leading to a loss for Black.

Rook vs. two advance Pawns
Rook vs two advance Pawns - King in danger

White’s Pawns are far advanced and are knocking on the door to become a Queen.  Black uses the power of his Rook to attack the Pawns from the rear setting up a draw position, as White King is forced into a corner, unable to support his Pawns.

White should have repeated the position, and he would have achieved a draw. Instead, he walks into checkmate.

Best Chess endgame winning Techniques with Rook + Pawn vs. Rook

Rook tactics and chess strategy in a Rook + Pawn vs. Rook is for the weaker side to keep his Rook behind the Pawn and bring King in front of the Passed Pawn. At the same time, the stronger side will try to cut the King off along files or ranks and placed his Rook behind his Pawn or place his Rook on the Queening rank.  These positions are important to understand and remember.  They are your foundation in Rook and Pawn ending, as are addition, subtraction, and multiplication in math.  As these positions are complicated for beginners, they are essential to master, which can be done through practice with a coach, online, or a friend.  I would have my students try to win against me with one minute on each of our clocks.  They must checkmate me or demonstrate a stalemate or force draw, depending on the position.  Each person learns differently, so find your learning style early, and you can make huge gains in your chess understanding.

Rook vs Advance Pawn

This position was analyzed by us earlier, and I think it’s important to review it.  These positions often happen in endgames.  It’s important to note that if Black Rook leaves the h, the file he will lose quicker.  White Rook will occupy the vacant file and move his King into the file with the protective cover of its Rook.

This position is of interest because of its technical nature; Black would draw if his King were on b7 as the Rook could pin the Pawn when White’s King reaches g7.  Chess is really a game of inches.
